Winter Wednesdays 2014

January 8 through February 26, 2014

 Join us on Wednesdays in January and February for special programs.  This year topics will focus on Bellingrath Gardens and Home, gardening, local history and nature.  Winter Wednesdays at Bellingrath is the perfect place to bring a friend and spend time among 65 acres of blooms!  Gardens Admission ($12.50 for adults & $7.00 for children 5-12) is charged for non-members attending programs unless otherwise listed. There are additional charges to tour the Home and/or to take the River Cruise.  Call 251.973.2217 X 110 for reservations.

January 15         

**Super Wednesday Program**

“Landscape for Life” with Mary Palmer Dargan. Mary Palmer will discuss easy problem-solving and landscape design tips that will enable everyone to solve pesky landscape issues.  This SUPER WEDNESDAY program includes a morning session, lunch and an afternoon session.Bring a photo or drawing of your landscape problem and let her help you create a solution!  Mary Palmer will be selling and signing her latest book, “Lifelong Landscape Design: Environments for Health and Longevity”. 10:30 – 2:00. January 22        

From Belly Dancers to Dragons: Exoticism in the Bellingrath Collection with Tom McGehee, Curator of the Bellingrath Home, will discuss decorative arts in the late 19th century which were influenced by a western love of the “exoticism” of the near and far east.  After a brief lecture, guests will tour the Bellingrath Home for a scavenger hunt for intriguing examples reflecting this historic trend. 10:30 – 11:30.



Birding On The Gulf Coast with Dr. Mark LaSalle from the Pascagoula River Audubon Center will help us identify birds along the Gulf Coast and how we can participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count.  Weather permitting he will lead a bird walk through the Gardens. 10:30- 11:30.


February 5        

“Great Plants for the South from the Southern Living Plant Collection” Kip McConnell, Director Plant Development Services Inc., will tell us about the plants from the Southern Living Plant Collection that are particularly good in gardens on the Gulf Coast. 10:30 – 11:30


February 12       

Raising Roses with Linda Guy, Rosarian for Bellingrath Gardens and Home’s award winning Rose Garden. will show us how to care for roses year round.  She will demonstrate rose pruning techniques to get your roses in top shape. 10:30- 11:30    


February 19       

**Super Wednesday Program**

China & Glass in Bellingrath Collection with Stephen Harrison, Curator of Decorative Art & Design of The Cleveland Museum of Art. This SUPER WEDNESDAY includes a morning lecture, lunch and afternoon tour of the china and glass collections in the Bellingrath Museum Home. 10:30 – 2:00. Reservations Required. Super Wednesday Admission: $ 10.00 for members / $ 20.00 for non-members (Includes lunch)

February 26       

Camellias! with Bobby Green from  Green Nurseries one of the best Camellia Nurseries on the Gulf Coast. Bobby Green is one of the best camellia growers in the area.  He will give us tips on growing camellias in our gardens and tell us about the most interesting varieties for our area.  Camellias will be available for sale in the Bellingrath Gift Shop. 10:30-11:30
