in_the_path_of_the_stormsTheodore, AL – Frye Gaillard, Shelia Hagler and Peggy Denniston will discuss their new book, In The Path of the Storms: Bayou La Batre, Coden and the Alabama Coast, at 10:00 a.m. on June 11, 2008 at Bellingrath Gardens and Home.

As part of Wonderful Wednesdays, Bellingrath’s summer program series, the authors will talk about how Bayou La Batre, Coden and the rest of the Alabama coast has sustained incredible damage from major storms over the years and still continues to survive each time redefining themselves despite all of the obstacles.  Books and photographs from the book will be on display in the Magnolia Café.

Gaillard is the writer in residence at the University of South Alabama and the author of more than twenty books, including Cradle of Freedom: Alabama and the Movement that Changed America; Watermelon Wine: Remembering the Golden Years of Country Music; and Prophet from Plains: Jimmy Carter and His Legacy.  Hagler and Denniston are artists-in-residence with the Mobile County Public Schools.  Hagler is a photographer and teacher that works with public school students in Bayou La Batre and other communities in south Mobile County.  She has collaborated with historian John Sledge on two books, Cities in Silence: A Guide to Mobile’s Historic Cemeteries and An Ornament to the City: Old Mobile Ironwork.  Denniston is a writer and teacher that also works with public school students in Bayou La Batre and south Mobile County.  She co-edited the book Eyes of the Storm: A Community Survives after Katrina.
Every Wednesday, Bellingrath offers a special program about Bellingrath Gardens and Home, gardening, local history or nature.  This year there will also be two programs for children.  Wonderful Wednesdays are open to the public and reservations are requested.    Members are admitted at no charge and regular admission applies to non-members.  Admission to the Gardens for adults is $10, for children 5 – 12 is $5.50 and is free for children 4 and under.
