THEODORE, ALABAMA - Visitors to Bellingrath Gardens and Home during spring will see azaleas, daffodils, cape daisies, lilies, camellias, roses, begonias and delphiniums. Like the many varieties of flowers, there are also a variety of special events that Bellingrath is hosting this year for every member of the family to enjoy.
Azalea Bloom Out!
March 13 - 21 (dates may vary depending on the weather)
The azalea is the flower most often associated with Bellingrath. Visitors will enjoy the blooms of more than 250,000 vibrant azaleas in an explosion of color throughout the 65 acres of Bellingrath Gardens during March. Varieties include: 'Formosa', 'Daphne Salmon', 'Southern Charm', 'Pride of Mobile', 'G.G. Gerbing', 'George Lindley Tabor', and 'Christmas Cheer'.
How to Achieve a Heaven on Earth Book Signing
March 14 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
The daffodil is one of the earliest spring blossoms at Bellingrath. Like the daffodil, the How to Achieve A Heaven on Earth book signing is the first of Bellingrath's bouquet of spring events. The book's editor, John E. Wade II, and contributors Dr. William E. Barrick, Bellingrath's Executive Director, and others will be available on Sunday, March 14 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Magnolia Café to sign copies of the book. Books are also for sale in the Bellingrath Gift Shop.
Easter Egg Hunt
Saturday, March 27 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. (rain day Saturday, April 3)
The cape daisy is a flower with lovely color variations much like the children at the Easter Egg Hunt. During the annual egg hunt the Great Lawn will be blanketed with children dressed in their Easter best and multi-colored Easter eggs. There will be special egg hunts for children of all ages with prizes, candy and activities as well as pictures with the Easter Bunny. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.
Easter Sunrise Service
Sunday, April 4 at 6:30 a.m.
For many, the trumpet-shaped Easter lily symbolizes purity, virtue, innocence hope and life - the very essence of Easter. Guests are invited to start their Easter Sunday on Live Oak Plaza for our Easter Sunrise Service. Admission to the Gardens is complimentary from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. Easter morning. Following the service, the Southern Belle will offer an exclusive Easter Sunday Breakfast. Guests will enjoy a breakfast from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. along scenic Fowl River. Tickets are $35 per person. Children under the age of five are free. Reservations are required and may be made by calling Alabama Cruises at 251.973.1244.
The 17th Annual Camellia Open Car Show
Saturday, April 10
The camellia has been divided into four classifications: Antique (Pre World War I), Historical (World War I - 1949), Heirloom (1950-1959) and Modern (1960 to the present). Like the camellia, classic cars have been divided into several classifications that includes; Pre-World War II, Post-World War II and Modern. Visitors will be able to see hundreds of classic and vintage automobiles from the Model T to the Firebird displayed on Bellingrath's Great Lawn at the 17th Annual Camellia Classic Open Car Show. Sponsored by the Mobile Bay Mustang Club, guests enjoy entertainment throughout the day as well as a barbeque lunch on the Great Lawn.
The 55th Annual Mobile Rose Society Rose Show
Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18
The rose is a classic beauty in the garden and has a long tradition at Bellingrath. Another long standing tradition at Bellingrath is the Annual Mobile Rose Society Rose Show held in the Magnolia Café. Visitors are invited to bring their best rose blooms and enter them in the show. Guests will enjoy the award-winning blooms and arrangements on display as well as learn how to grow roses from area experts. Rose supplies, books and gifts will be on sale in the Bellingrath Gift Shop. Tour the Bellingrath Rose Garden during its first blush, which features more than 75 varieties of All-American Rose Selections and more than 2,000 roses.
2nd Annual National Public Garden Day
Friday, May 7
National Public Gardens Day is a national day of celebration to raise awareness of America's public gardens and their important role in promoting environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation, and education in communities nationwide. The 7th Annual Mother's Day Concert on Live Oak Plaza
Sunday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m.
With different shades of white, lavender and blue the delphinium is one of the treasures of Bellingrath's spring plantings. Like the delphinium, mothers are a cherished member of the family. On Sunday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m. Bellingrath will celebrate mothers with a performance by the Mobile Youth Symphony Orchestra with conductor Robert Seebacher on Live Oak Plaza. Guests are invited to bring chairs and a picnic supper.
