Field Trip Planning Checklist
v Before You Come to the Gardens
- Have your students complete a KWL Chart or a similar activity
KWL Chart - KWL =What I Know, What I Want to know and when you return to your classroom, What I Learned
- Introduce the vocabulary list. This list is intended to help students become familiar with words they will hear on their visit. It should not be used for testing purposes.

- Prepare your children with an introduction to the program they will attend by discussing general content found in the link below.
Pre Field Trip Activities
- Discuss the group’s eating arrangements so participants will know what to expect and how to plan for when and where they will eat. Bellingrath offers lunch in the Magnolia Café and has picnic facilities.
v While You are in the Gardens
- In the event of an emergency, have all students come to the entry building auditorium. If students should get separated, they should go to the entry building and someone will help them find their group.
- Should an emergency arive, contact anyone who works in the Gardens and Home. They will get help. If you have your cell phone, call the main Bellingrath number at 251.973.2217 and give them your location in the Gardens and the nature of your emergency.
- Familiarize yourself and students with restroom facilities.
v When Your Return to Your Classroom
- Complete your KWL Chart of your discussion of what you learned. Use the post field trip handout.
Post Field Trip Activities
- Encourage your students to write letters to Bellingrath Gardens and Home about their trip. Include pictures and examples of other follow-up activities you might have.
